Lead Like Jesus,
Make Disciples

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”
— Matthew 28:19–20 (ESV)

As worship team members, we’re seen. We’re heard. We have influence — whether we ask for it or not. But Jesus didn’t just call us to lead songs; He called us to lead people — and to lead them like He did.

When Jesus gave the Great Commission — “Go and make disciples” — He was speaking to followers, not just pastors or missionaries. That includes us as worship leaders and team members. Jesus led differently. He didn’t demand attention — He served. He didn’t just teach truth — He lived it. He didn’t perform — He gave His life. And the way He made disciples was through relationships, authenticity, humility, and consistent, Spirit-led obedience.

Jesus didn’t just teach His disciples from a distance or give them instructions from a stage — He did life with them. He walked with them, ate with them, prayed with them, and stayed close through both the joyful moments and the hard ones. He gave them His time, His attention, and His heart. He didn’t just teach with words — He taught through how He lived.

Disciple-making for Jesus wasn’t a task — it was a relationship. It was about sharing life. And we can follow His example by doing the same with those around us — especially within our team.

So what does it mean for us to lead like Jesus on the worship team?

  • It means serving before singing.

  • It means showing up prepared and on time — not for perfection, but out of love for people and reverence for God.

  • It means discipling through example — letting our off-stage lives reflect our on-stage worship.

  • It means mentoring newer team members, being approachable, and creating a culture where Jesus is the focus, not performance.

Disciple-making happens in the quiet moments: backstage conversations, mid-week encouragement, praying with someone before practice, or inviting a team member to grow in their walk with God. Every time we serve, we have the opportunity to lead like Jesus — not for our own glory, but so others might know Him more deeply.

Reflection Questions:

  • How am I leading like Jesus within the worship team?

  • Is there someone on the team I can invest in spiritually?

  • Does my life off the stage reflect what I lead on the stage?

Prayer:

Jesus, thank You for showing us how to lead with love, humility, and purpose. Help us to lead like You — not just in front of people, but in the unseen places. Let our worship not only lift Your name but also lead others closer to You. Teach us to make disciples by how we serve, how we live, and how we love. Amen.
