deeper in
god's presence
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”
— James 4:8a (ESV)

As worship leaders and team members, our calling is sacred. What we do each week is not merely musical—it’s spiritual leadership. Whether you sing, play an instrument, run sound, or help with media, you are part of something far more significant than a setlist or production. We are not entertainers, we are atmosphere-setters, gatekeepers, and servants who make room for people to encounter the living God.
And here’s the truth: "We cannot lead others into a place with God that we have not first been ourselves!"
You can rehearse perfectly. You can sing with flawless tone. You can hit every cue and follow every transition. But if you have not spent time in God’s presence, you’re leading on empty. Worship ministry is not about impressing people with sound; it’s about inviting people into the presence of the One who can change everything.
Excellence Matters—But Intimacy Matters More!
Yes, God is worthy of our best. Rehearsal, skill development, good timing, and attention to detail are all part of honoring Him. But when excellence becomes the focus and intimacy is lost, we trade presence for performance. God is not moved by perfect chords or vocal runs—He is drawn to hungry hearts. And hunger is cultivated in prayer.
Prayer is the Gateway to Depth
Prayer is not a warm-up before rehearsal or a routine checkbox before a service. It’s an open door into the throne room of God. It’s where we pour out our weakness and receive His strength. It’s where the noise of our responsibilities fades and the voice of the Spirit becomes clear.
In prayer, God begins to refine our motives, heal our hearts, and align our will to His. It’s in prayer that we’re reminded: this isn’t about us. It’s not about being noticed, applauded, or admired—it’s about Jesus. And when our hearts are centered on Him, His presence flows more freely through us.
In His presence:
Pride is stripped away.
Fear is quieted.
Comparison loses its grip.
Joy and peace take root.
Boldness in the Spirit is restored.
Going Deeper in Prayer
Going deeper means slowing down. It means carving out intentional time beyond the team devotion. It means listening as much as you speak—learning to recognize the still, small voice of God.
It also means being vulnerable. Not just about your team responsibilities, but about your personal walk. Are you tired? Distracted? Feeling distant from God? He already knows. He’s not waiting for you to get it together—He’s waiting for you to draw near.
And we must learn to make space for Him. Not just in our private lives, but even in our public ministry. In rehearsal, can we pause to pray for someone who’s burdened? In worship, can we hold a moment longer if the Spirit is moving? Going deeper means being sensitive enough to adjust our agenda in favor of His.
- We can’t manufacture God’s presence.
-
But we can prepare for it.
-
Preparation Begins in the Quiet Place
Before we ever step onto a platform, we should first kneel before Him in the secret place. This is where we are formed. Not just as musicians—but as worshippers. Not just as performers—but as carriers of His presence.
Preparation looks like:
-
Daily time in prayer and Scripture
-
Repentance and humility
-
Praying together as a team, not just individually
-
Asking God to purify our hearts and anoint our hands, voices, and minds
This is how we go from routine to revival—from performance to presence.
Let This Be Our Goal
-
Not just to lead songs. Not just to execute a flawless set.
-
But to lead from a place of deep, personal communion with God.
-
To know Him so intimately that His presence is evident every time we worship—on and off the stage.
May we be worshippers first, musicians second. May we be prayer warriors, not just performers. May our pursuit of His presence go beyond the platform and into every part of our lives.
Because when we go deeper, we don’t just change the atmosphere of a room—we allow God to change the hearts within it!
Prayer:
"Father, we don’t want to just serve You with our gifts—we want to know You deeply. Stir a hunger in us to seek You in prayer, to dwell in Your presence, and to lead from overflow. Help us to prioritize communion over performance, and encounter over routine. Teach us to wait on You, listen to You, and be transformed by You. May Your presence be the heartbeat of this worship team. In Jesus’ name, amen."
Reflection Questions:
-
How would you describe your personal prayer life right now? Is it deep and consistent, or rushed and surface-level?
-
Do you make space to encounter God's presence outside of the worship set? Why or why not?
-
How can our worship team make more room for prayer—both personally and collectively?
-
Have you been relying on your skill more than your intimacy with God? What needs to shift?
-
What would change in our worship if we prioritized time in God's presence more intentionally?
