YOUR GIFT IS NOT YOUR IDENTITY

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live,

but Christ lives in me.”

Galatians 2:20

Guitar Being Played

As creatives, it is easy to connect our identity with what we do.

We may begin to think, “I am a singer,” “I am a musician,” “I am a designer,” “I am a photographer,” “I am an editor,” or “I am a leader.”

These roles are part of what we do, but they are not the foundation of who we are.

  • Your voice is a gift.

  • Your musical ability is a gift.

  • Your creativity is a gift.

  • Your leadership is a gift.

  • Your ability to design, photograph, edit, communicate, or create is a gift.

But your gift is not your identity!

God gave you gifts so that you could serve Him and bless others, not so that your gifts would become the source of your value.

Sometimes we receive praise and feel valuable. Then, when someone criticizes our work, we feel rejected or discouraged.

But when our identity is rooted in Christ, we can separate who we are from what we do.

Our work can be corrected without our identity being destroyed. We can make mistakes without believing that we are failures. We can receive feedback without becoming defensive. We can celebrate someone else's success without feeling threatened. And we can serve faithfully even when nobody notices.

  • The platform may change.

  • The role may change.

  • The level of our ability may change.

  • People's opinions may change.

But our identity in Christ remains secure. Before you are a creative, you are God's child. Before you are a worship leader, you belong to Christ. Before you are a musician, designer, photographer, editor, or leader, your identity is found in Jesus. Therefore, don't use your gift to prove your worth. Use your gift because you already know your worth is found in Christ!

Prayer

Lord Jesus, Thank You for every gift and ability You have entrusted to me. Forgive me when I allow my performance, success, recognition, or people's opinions to determine my value. Remind me that my identity is not found in what I can do, but in who I am in You.

Help me to receive encouragement with humility and correction with maturity. Teach me to serve without needing recognition and to create without needing approval. When I fail, remind me that I am still Your child. When I am criticized, remind me that my identity is secure in Christ. When others succeed, help me celebrate their gifts without comparing myself to them. May every gift You have given me point people back to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
