Presence, Power, Purpose
PART 2

Ministry Requires the Power of God
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you...” (Acts 1:8)

Whether we serve in worship, music, production, media, creative arts, livestreaming, photography, videography, stage management, or technical support, it is easy to become focused on preparation, excellence, and performance. While these things are important, Acts 1:8 reminds us that effective ministry does not begin with talent, technology, creativity, or skill. It begins with the Holy Spirit.
Jesus gave His disciples a simple but powerful pattern:
Presence → Power → Purpose
Before they could fulfill God's purpose, they needed God's power. Before they could receive God's power, they needed to wait in God's presence.
The same principle applies to every Worship, Arts & Media ministry today.
The word “power” in this passage comes from the Greek word Dunamis (δύναμις), which means power, strength, ability, or the capacity to accomplish something. It refers to a supernatural power that produces change and results far beyond human ability.
The word Dunamis is also the root of the English word dynamite. While the biblical meaning is far deeper than an explosion, the image helps us understand a power that can truly transform situations and lives.
Jesus did not merely promise comfort or encouragement to His disciples. He promised that the Holy Spirit would give them Dunamis—power from heaven—enabling them to be His witnesses in a world filled with challenges, opposition, and spiritual need.
Furthermore, the Dunamis that Jesus promised in Acts 1:8 is not a lesser power than any other power of God. It is the very same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Paul prayed that believers would understand: “His incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength He exerted when He raised Christ from the dead.” (Ephesians 1:19–20)
Paul also writes in Romans 8:11: “And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of His Spirit who lives in you.” This means that the Holy Spirit who dwells within us is the very same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead. This resurrection power brings life to what is dry, restores what is broken, brings hope into hopeless situations, and transforms human hearts.
For Worship, Arts & Media teams, this truth is incredibly important.
-
We may have the most talented musicians, gifted vocalists, state-of-the-art sound systems, flawless productions, and highly creative media content. Yet none of these can change a human heart.
-
We may impress people. But only the Holy Spirit can transform people.
-
We may capture people's attention. But only the Holy Spirit can draw their hearts to Christ.
-
We may create an atmosphere. But only the Holy Spirit can bring people into the presence of God.
This is why our ministry must never depend solely on talent, experience, creativity, or technology. It must depend on the power of God.
The Lord declares in Zechariah 4:6: “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the Lord Almighty.
As WAM ministers, we need more than excellence.
We need the anointing of God.
Excellence prepares the platform.
But the Holy Spirit touches hearts.
Excellence creates the environment.
But the Holy Spirit transforms lives.
Excellence captures attention.
But the Holy Spirit leads people into an encounter with God.
When the power of God is at work through our ministry:
-
Worship becomes more than music—it becomes an encounter with God.
-
Arts become more than creativity—they become a reflection of His glory.
-
Media becomes more than communication—it becomes a tool for the Gospel.
-
Technology becomes more than equipment—it becomes a channel through which God reaches people.
-
Behind-the-scenes service becomes more than a task—it becomes an act of worship.
Ultimately, what people need is not better production, better music, or more advanced technology. What they truly need is an encounter with the living Jesus Christ. And that can only happen through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Prayer points:
-
Pray for a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit.
-
Pray for God's anointing upon worship leaders, musicians, artists, media teams, and technical teams.
-
Pray for genuine life transformation through the ministry of the team.
-
Pray for wisdom, creativity, discernment, and unity within the team.
-
Pray that WAM ministries would depend more on God's power than on human ability.
Reflection questions:
-
Am I relying more on my abilities, experience, or technology than on the Holy Spirit?
-
Do I pursue God's anointing as much as I pursue excellence?
-
Do I truly believe that the resurrection power of Christ is at work in my life and ministry?
